Fall Lash Shedding: How to Care for Your Eyelash…

October is officially here and fall is in the air! But what do we dread about our favorite season? Fall lash shedding. Today, we’re sharing why this happens and what you can do in order to keep your lashes lush and full! #yourewelcome

WHAT IS LASH SHEDDING?

Remember when you’d make a wish after noticing a fallen lash? Yes, that was lash shedding and we all experience it, even with lash extensions.

Even though they completely replenish and regrow every 60–90 days, our lashes fall out in cycles. But don’t worry, this IS a healthy part of our hair-growth routine. On average, we lose up to 20% of our natural lashes every two weeks and, depending on our individual hair-growth, we can shed between 1 and 5 natural eyelashes per day.

The cool thing is that right at this very moment you have a new eyelash growing to replace a lash that fell out and, for the majority of us, this is a process that we hardly notice.

FALL LASH SHEDDING: WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

You know how some animals shed their winter coats? Well, it’s mostly the same for us and lash shedding!

Why does this happen and why this time of year? As fall approaches and the seasons and temperatures begin to change, so does the humidity. This change is what can alter our lash growth cycle and can be the reason we notice a few fallen lashes here and there.

During this time, our bodies are increasing oil production to keep not only our hair, but also our skin from getting dehydrated. Just like it’s not uncommon for us to notice additional shedding with the hair on our head this time of year, it’s the same with our lashes.

HOW DOES LASH SHEDDING AFFECT EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

Here’s the deal: Lash shedding does not magically stop when you have extensions. It’s important to know that when you have a natural eyelash that sheds, your extension will go with it. For all of us, each individual eyelash is programmed to reach a certain length, fall out, then regrow, taking the extension along for the ride.

But, there’s good news! As long as you keep up with your lash refill appointments every 2–3 weeks (like the good lash guest we know you are…wink, wink), your lash line will stay full and gorgeous!

EYELASH EXTENSION CARE DURING THE SHEDDING CYCLE

Keep Your Lashes Clean

When you notice your lashes are shedding, one important thing to do is to keep your extensions clean. Why? During a seasonal change, additional buildup can accumulate along your lash line. To prevent this, use a lash extension-safe cleanser like our special eyelash foaming cleanser that will not only keep your lashes squeaky clean, but can also be used as an all-over facial cleanser. Talk about a win-win!

Another quick tip: Brush your lashes daily with a clean lash wand. This will keep your lashes in place and help to brush away any residue that may have landed along your lash line.

Use A Lash Sealant

Investing in a lash sealant is a good idea year-round, especially during the fall season. While it will not keep your lashes from shedding, a sealant will extend the life of the adhesive, locking your extensions in place for a longer period of time. Just think of it as an extra layer of protection for your lashes during the fall lash shedding season.

We have 2 sealants here at The Lash Lounge:
Our Black Diamond Sealant is a daily-use product that add a dark sheen and extends the life of your extensions. Our Protecting Sealant is used twice a week and is perfect for those with active lifestyles, anyone who lives in high humidity areas and those with oily skin.

Do yourself a favor and snag one of these “must-have” sealants during your next appointment. You’ll thank us later!

Keep Up with Your Lash Refills

Like we’ve mentioned before, it’s so important you do not miss a lash refill appointment…like, ever! Coming in for refills every 2 weeks will allow you to maintain that voluptuous lash look you love, even during the lash shedding cycle. Check out our membership options to make it even easier!

Never forget we’re here for you! If you have lash extensions and have some concerns about how many lashes you’re shedding, chat with your stylist. They are the trained experts when it comes to all things lashes and they’re here to help and offer tips along every step of your lash journey!

Eyelash Extension Care: To Blow Dry or Not? What…

Blow drying: It’s a crucial part of many women’s morning routines. But when it comes to eyelash extension care, is it safe? Will that morning primp cause your lashes to flop? We sat down with our expert training team to get the scoop. Get ready! The facts just might “blow” you away!

1. Getting Too Close to Any Heat Source Is a No-No

Scorched lashes? No one wants that! Whether it’s your blow dryer on the highest heat setting, stoves, ovens, smoke or really anything with an open flame, be aware of how close you get your lashes and eyelash extensions to heat.

Not only can your lashes get singed, but extreme heat can also cause synthetic lash extensions to melt, which can make your lashes appear clumpy when they cool back down. What a mess!

Steer clear of high heat to avoid losing that beautiful shape you and your stylist have worked so hard to perfect.

2. Keep It Cool

Sorry, ladies, when it comes how to care for eyelash extensions, the blow dryer and your lash extensions, blowing high heat directly onto your eyes is definitely something to avoid.

For example, if you use a round brush and blow dryer to do your bangs, make sure your lashes aren’t collateral damage. Why? The heat can cause your lash extensions to singe, lose that beloved curl, warp, bend or curl in opposite directions. Yikes!

The best thing to do when drying your hair is to put the dryer on a low heat setting. Yes, it might take a couple extra minutes to get those lovely locks dry, but it’ll be better for your lashes and your hair!

3. Flip It, Flip It Good!

If you can’t make the switch to the cooler heat setting on your blow dryer just yet, give this a try: Flip your head over and dry your hair upside down. This will minimize the heat blowing directly onto your face, so you can still get out the door fast!

If you try this, still make sure you toggle the heat setting down to “cool” when drying the areas closest to your face for the safest blow dry.

4. A Nod to Nozzles

These days, many blow dryers come with some useful accessories and tools. Our favorite is the concentrator nozzle. Don’t leave that bad boy in the box—get it out and use it!

A concentrator nozzle funnels the hairdryer’s airflow directly onto the portion of hair you’re working on. This helps keep your lash extensions safer because it limits their exposure to the air.

If you’re into this topic as much as we are, be sure to tune in on Instagram next week for #TrainingTakeoverTuesday, where our training team will continue to talk heat and lash extensions! Because, at The Lash Lounge, how to take care of eyelash extensions is a topic that never goes out of style!

How to Take Care of Eyelash Extensions and Keep…

To keep your natural lashes and lash extensions looking their best, show them a little lash love! Here are the 5 lash aftercare keys to keeping your best accessory in tip-top shape!

1. Keep Them Clean

Taking care of your eyelash extensions starts with this basics: Make sure they’re clean! Build-up from body oils and products we use can accumulate along our lash line, which is why gently cleaning our lashes each day is a must!

Lash Cleanser

We got you covered with our special eyelash foaming cleanser. It will keep your lashes squeaky clean and can also be used as an all-over facial cleanser! Certified organic, it’s made with the same pH balance as natural tears, so it’s even perfect for our guests with sensitive eyes!

Makeup Removers

Looking for an extension-safe makeup remover? We have two options for you! Our Special Eye & Makeup Remover (great for those with sensitive eyes!) Eye Makeup Remover Gel (great for taking off waterproof makeup!)

Each can be snagged at a salon near you! Both contain a soy protein that removes oil, dirt and makeup, while helping to normalize the skin’s moisture content and retain the suppleness of that fragile eye area.

After all, clean lashes make healthy lashes!

2. Brush Them

When asked how to care for eyelash extensions, simple grooming is near the top of our list! Whether in the morning or at night, it’s always a good idea to brush your lashes each day with a clean lash wand. This not only frees any residue, but also helps keep your lashes fluffed and in place.

3. Pick the Right Products

Products are an important part of any beauty and skincare routine. It’s essential to choose the ones that are right for your body and safe to use. How?

  • Keep an eye on the expiration dates of your makeup, skincare and cleansing products. It’s never healthy to coat your lashes with products that are old and out of date—yikes!
  • When it comes to lash extensions, not all beauty products are safe to use. Stay away from waterproof mascara and any oil- or alcohol-based products or cosmetics. These types of products can break the bond of the adhesive, which can cause the extension to detach from your natural lash.

For lashes that last, try one of our two lash sealants: Protecting and Black Diamond. Both prevent premature breakdown of the adhesive and lengthens the life of your extensions. This extra layer of protection assists in keeping the lashes in place until your natural eyelashes are ready to shed. For the very best results from a lash sealant, use twice a week.

Eyelash extension care is so important. If you’re ever unsure about any products you’re using with eyelash extensions, bring them with you to your next appointment and let us take a look. That’s what we’re here for!

4. Promote Hair Growth

Of course, vitamins and growth serums help our hair and lashes grow and stay healthy, but so can something as simple as adding certain foods to our regular diet. Foods like avocados, salmon, nuts and even eggs give our bodies those natural vitamins and minerals to keep our lashes strong and continually growing. We like to call them “lash fuel”!

5. Be as Gentle as Possible

Want your lashes to last longer? Be gentle with them. Vigorous rubbing, tugging, plucking or anything that adds friction to your lashes can damage them. As a general rule of thumb, the less you mess with your lashes, the longer they will last.

Whether you’ve made an investment in lash extensions or you simply want to keep those natural lashes looking their best, be good to them—show them that much deserved lash love! Now, that’s how to take care of eyelash extensions!

Most important, sign up for a membership to help your lashes combat that dreaded natural lash shedding cycle. Save big on bi-weekly refills, plus 10% off additional services and products.

How To Care For Eyelash Extensions: 5 Fool-Proof Ways…

While we love a good laugh, one thing we never kid about is the eyelash extension care and lash longevity. It’s no coincidence that taking care of your lashes gets you the most mileage out of your fluttery friends. Today, we’re sharing some fool-proof ways to keep them at their best for longer!

1. CLEAN + BRUSH THEM DAILY

It may seem like “How to Care for Eyelash Extensions 101,” but one of the easiest ways to extend the life of your lashes is simply to keep them clean. In terms of your day-to-day routine, that just means keeping up with daily face-washing. If you’ve already built in the suds and scrubs, the good news is there’s no extra task for you. We recommend using one of our oil-free, lash extension-safe makeup removers, which is the best way to keep your lashes clean and secure. Purchase a cleanser at one of our salons and choose from either our Special Makeup Remover or our Eye Makeup Remover Gel. Learn more about the difference between these two life-changing lash cleansers.

Wondering just how you should clean your lashes? Don’t worry we won’t leave you hanging. Just follow the 3 steps below:

  1. Use our oil-free and alcohol-free eyewash specifically formulated for lash extensions.
  2. Refrain from pulling or tugging your lashes while washing. Simply use your fingertips or a lash-cleansing brush to gently massage the cleanser into your lash line.
  3. Rinse with fresh water until the cleanser and makeup residue is removed.

Along with cleaning your lashes daily, you’ll also want to make sure you brush your lashes every morning with a clean mascara wand. Why morning? While you’re sleeping, your lashes can tangle and flip to the side, so the secret to keeping them in place is to gently brush through and fluff them.

2. BE GENTLE

As a general rule of thumb for eyelash extension care, the less you mess with your lashes, the longer they will last. So, no rubbing, tugging or plucking when you have lash extensions! If you do a lot of rubbing and messing with your lash line, this could cause your extensions to fall off prematurely…who wants that?

We do know and understand that everyone is human and you may have an itch near your lash line from time to time. The good news is that there are ways to soothe the itch without any vigorous rubbing or pulling on your lashes. A simple trick is to use your mascara wand to gently brush through your lashes. Don’t you feel better already just thinking about it? But if you must, a slight rub on your eyelid in a circular motion is a-ok, too.

3. USE A LASH SEALANT

If you have invested in lash extensions, then you will also want to be sure to invest in a lash sealant. This product goes a long way to extend the life of the adhesive used to attach the extension to your natural lash. It locks your extensions in place for a longer period of time.

Be sure to purchase one of the two we offer: our Protecting Sealer and our Black Diamond Coating Sealant. What’s the difference between these two? The Black Diamond sealer is a daily use product that adds a darker sheen and helps extend the life of your extensions. The Protecting Sealer is used twice weekly and perfect for those with active lifestyles, those who live in high humidity areas, and those with oily skin types.

In short, a lash sealant is the perfect aftercare product to extend the life of your lash extensions and retention in between refills. Next to the investment you’ve made in your lash extensions themselves, purchasing a lash sealer is a close second!

4. ONLY USE LASH EXTENSION-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS

Not all beauty products are okay to use with lash extensions. Be sure to stay away from waterproof mascara and any oil- or alcohol-based products or cosmetics. And yes, this includes any moisturizers with oil that are applied around the eyes.

Check out last week’s post on lash extension-friendly beauty products and cosmetics!

5. DON’T MISS YOUR REFILLS…LIKE, EVER!

When it comes down to it, fundamentally, how to take care of eyelash extensions boils down to keeping up with your lash refill appointments every two weeks. It’s the only way to keep your lash line looking full. When you come in for your refill appointment, your stylist will perform maintenance to freshen up your current set, then place new extensions for added fullness. When you come in for refills on the regular, you ensure a full, lush lash line and a fresh lash look, like we all love!

On the other hand, if you don’t keep up with your regular refills, your stylist will have to add more extensions than usual to bring that fullness back. This could mean you need to invest in a service upgrade. This is definitely doable and we can also make sure to book the right amount of time for your appointment so we can get your lashes back to the fab fullness you adore.

So, schedule your refill appointments regularly and even ask us about our membership program, which will save you money on regular refills and make sure you’re always looking and feeling your best!

The Truth About the Most Common Lash Extension Myths

From whether your natural lashes will be damaged to lash extensions are one size fits all, we’re sharing the truth about the most common lash extension myths on our blog today!

MYTH 1: Having lash extensions applied could hurt or feel uncomfortable.

TRUTH: The process of having lash extension applied does not hurt and should never cause discomfort if they are being applied by a trained lash stylist. Actually, the lash extension application process is a very relaxing experience and many clients enjoy a nap, or ‘lash naps’ as we like to call them. So if you have ever heard that having lash extensions applied can hurt or be uncomfortable, this is not true. No pain should ever be involved during lash extension applications. What is involved is a luxury, spa like experience to make you relax!

MYTH 2: Eyelash extensions could damage my natural lashes.

TRUTH: When you combine premium products and trained lash stylists with proper application techniques, then your natural lashes should never be damaged. During the lash application process, it’s imperative to the health of your lashes to have each natural hair isolated when an extension is adhered to it and ensure proper separation so that the hairs can continue to grow and shed as they would naturally. At The Lash Lounge, we only use formaldehyde-free, medical-grade adhesives which are made exclusively for lash extensions. The combination of our top quality adhesive plus the individual lash attachment will sustain the health and integrity of your natural lash hairs indefinitely.

MYTH 3: My natural lashes will be shorter if/when I decide to have my extensions removed.

TRUTH: When eyelash extensions are applied by a trained lash stylist, your natural lashes are allowed to grow as usual. Women without lash extensions usually apply and remove mascara every day. The application and slight pulling of lashes when applying mascara followed by the cleaning and rubbing of your eyes to remove the mascara can greatly damage your lashes. With a proper lash extension application, there will be no damage and your lashes should grow better than they would if you were applying, wearing and cleaning off mascara day to day. So the myth that your natural lashes could be shorter if you were to remove your extensions is not true.

MYTH 4: Eyelash extensions are one size fits all and my lashes will look just like my friend’s lashes after she got her lash extensions.

TRUTH: All of us have different eye shapes as well as a different number of natural lashes. What does this mean? It means that lash extensions can be (and should be) customized just for YOU. It also means that your lash extensions may not look just like your friend’s lash extensions since you both have different eye shapes and different amounts of natural lashes. Here at The Lash Lounge, we specialize in safe and customized eyelash extensions. Using our custom-built mapping system, our stylists are trained to implement our exclusive techniques which tailors a perfect design for each individual’s unique eye shape, lifestyle and desired lash look.

Eyelash Extension Care: Tips on Brushing and Cleaning Your…

As lash masters, we often get asked how to care for eyelash extensions. The good news is, when you have eyelash extensions, the overall upkeep is very minimal and very easy to manage if you clean and brush them regularly. Follow these eyelash extension care tips (plus visit your salon for refill appointments every 2–3 weeks) and your lashes will stay looking full and fabulous!

#1: Keep Your Eyelashes Clean

We’ll start with the basics of eyelash extension care: Keep that fluffy lash line squeaky clean! When you clean your lashes regularly, you are helping to keep your natural oils at bay. Cleansing regularly also helps prevent premature lash shedding. Cleanse your lashes daily with a gentle, lash extension-friendly cleanser and make sure it’s oil- and alcohol-free!

THE SCARY TRUTH: When you skip your daily lash wash, your lash follicles can get clogged with oil, dirt and debris, which can make it difficult for new lashes to grow.

Despite this, it’s not uncommon for lash stylists to see guests with severe build-up of makeup residue, oil and/or dead skin cells along their lash lines. This is not only unhygienic, but it can also cut into your appointment time because your stylist must make sure they’re squeaky clean before performing your refill.

#2: Brush Your Eyelashes Daily

No one wants a messy lash line. To take care of your eyelash extensions, brush your lashes daily to prevent crisscrossing. A simple 15–20 second sweep through your lashes in the morning will put stray lashes in their place. Make sure you’re gentle when brushing your eyelash extensions, as you don’t want to tug at them if they are tangled or overlapping. And take a quick peek to make sure your lash wand is clean. We don’t want any clumpy mascara getting in the way of that smooth sweep!

BONUS! Brushing your lashes each day helps your extensions last longer.

5 Tips for Taking Care of Eyelash Extensions

Taking care of your lashes is essential for a beautiful, long-lasting set. We’ve got all the details on how to care for eyelash extensions so that you keep on loving them…and loving YOU!

Follow these 5 tips to keep your lash look in check:

1. Keep Your Eyelashes Clean

The best way to keep your lash extensions clean is by using a lash extension-safe cleanser. At The Lash Lounge, we offer cleansers that are specially formulated for cleaning your extensions: Oil Free Liquid Remover and Oil Free Gel Remover. Our gentle, oil-free and alcohol-free eye makeup removers have the same pH balance as natural tears and come in a liquid or gel formula.

When cleaning your eye area to remove makeup and eyeshadow, we recommend applying the cleanser to a cotton pad. Be sure to saturate the cotton pad because the dry cotton could catch onto your lashes. Very gently rub your eyelid and avoid rubbing your lashes. When you need to clean your lashes, use your lash wand and gently brush through your lashes.

2. Omit Oil-Based Products

Any skincare products, creams or cosmetics that are oil-based are a no-no when it comes to lash extension care. Be sure to select products that are labeled “oil-free” to ensure the longevity of your lashes. And when in doubt, always read the ingredients label to make sure what you are using is truly oil-free.

3. Retire Your Mascara

The beauty of lash extensions is that you have lovely, long, full lashes without having to wear mascara. We know that some of you may still want to wear mascara on occasion, and that’s okay as long as it’s a mascara made for lash extensions. However, wearing no mascara at all is better when it comes to extending the life of your lashes.

If you’re a mascara fiend, be sure to ONLY wear a water-based mascara. Be aware, this is not the same as a waterproof mascara, so make sure you look closely at those labels! When applying your lash extension-safe mascara, only use one coat and only apply to the tips of your lashes.

4. Avoid Overexposure to Moisture

Too much moisture on a constant basis is not good for your lashes. But daily face-washing and activities like swimming are lash extension-safe.

5. Maintain Lash Extension Refills Regularly

All of the tips we have mentioned are so very important, but this one is the big kahuna! Sticking with your refill appointments every 2 weeks will keep your lashes looking their absolute best. After all, when it comes to how to care for lash extensions, you need to have a full, luscious lash line to start with!

The longer you wait for a fill, the harder it is for your lash stylist to keep your lashes looking fabulous. If you go too long without getting a lash refill, a full new set may be required. So, maintaining your refills is a good idea in more ways than one!
