5 Simple Ways to Keep Your Lashes Looking Their…

To keep your natural lashes and lash extensions looking their best, show them a little lash love! Here are the 5 lash aftercare keys to keeping your best accessory in tip-top shape!

1. Keep Your Lashes Clean

Build-up from body oils and products we use can accumulate along our lash line, which is why gently cleaning our lashes each day is a must!

Lash Cleanser

We got you covered with our special eyelash foaming cleanser. It will keep your lashes squeaky clean and can also be used as an all-over facial cleanser! Certified organic, it’s made with the same pH balance as natural tears, so it’s even perfect for our guests with sensitive eyes!

Makeup Removers

Looking for an extension-safe makeup remover? We have two options for you! Our Special Eye & Makeup Remover (great for those with sensitive eyes!) Eye Makeup Remover Gel (great for taking off waterproof makeup!)

Each can be snagged at a salon near you! Both contain a soy protein that removes oil, dirt and makeup, while helping to normalize the skin’s moisture content and retain the suppleness of that fragile eye area.

After all, clean lashes make healthy lashes!

2. Brush Your Lashes

Whether in the morning or at night, it’s always a good idea to brush your lashes each day with a clean lash wand. This not only frees any residue, but also helps keep your lashes fluffed and in place.

3. Pick the Right Products

Products are an important part of any beauty and skincare routine. It’s essential to choose the ones that are right for your body and safe to use. How?

  • Keep an eye on the expiration dates of your makeup, skincare and cleansing products. It’s never healthy to coat your lashes with products that are old and out of date—yikes!
  • When it comes to lash extensions, not all beauty products are safe to use. Stay away from waterproof mascara and any oil- or alcohol-based products or cosmetics. These types of products can break the bond of the adhesive, which can cause the extension to detach from your natural lash.

For lashes that last, try one of our two lash sealants: Protecting and Black Diamond. Both prevent premature breakdown of the adhesive and lengthens the life of your extensions. This extra layer of protection assists in keeping the lashes in place until your natural eyelashes are ready to shed. For the very best results from a lash sealant, use twice a week.

If you’re ever unsure about any products you’re using with eyelash extensions, bring them with you to your next appointment and let us take a look. That’s what we’re here for!

4. Promote Hair Growth

Of course, vitamins and growth serums help our hair and lashes grow and stay healthy, but so can something as simple as adding certain foods to our regular diet. Foods like avocados, salmon, nuts and even eggs give our bodies those natural vitamins and minerals to keep our lashes strong and continually growing. We like to call them “lash fuel”!

5. Be as Gentle as Possible

Want your lashes to last longer? Be gentle with them. Vigorous rubbing, tugging, plucking or anything that adds friction to your lashes can damage them. As a general rule of thumb, the less you mess with your lashes, the longer they will last.

Whether you’ve made an investment in lash extensions or you simply want to keep those natural lashes looking their best, be good to them—show them that much deserved lash love! Most important, sign up for a membership to help your lashes combat that dreaded natural lash shedding cycle. Save big on bi-weekly refills, plus 10% off additional services and products.

Swimming with Lash Extensions: 6 Myths…Busted!

With summer’s official start around the corner, it’s the perfect time to set the record straight on swimming with lash extensions!

MYTH 1: I can’t take a dip in the pool or go swimming if I have lash extensions.

FACT: False! You can most definitely go swimming with eyelash extensions. Just remember to give your extensions hours to set before getting them wet.

MYTH 2: While swimming, waterproof mascara works just as well as lash extensions.

FACT: Nope! Mascara (yes, even some waterproof mascaras) will most likely smudge or run while swimming. Know what won’t have you looking like a raccoon while you enjoy your time splishing and splashing? Lash extensions! Each extension is adhered directly to your natural lash, keeping it in place and keeping you at ease.

MYTH 3: All lash extensions are swim-friendly.

FACT: Here at The Lash Lounge, our stylists apply the proper amount of adhesive to cure the bonds on your individual extensions, so you’re always a go for a dip in the pool. But if you’re doing laps or splashing through some waves, we do recommend throwing on a pair of goggles to avoid the extra friction.

MYTH 4: I don’t need any special products for my lashes when I’m water-bound!

FACT: If you don’t have them already, we recommend a couple different goodies built specifically to keep your lashes intact for longer. Don’t leave home without packing these Lash Lounge products, both available to purchase at your salon!

Lash sealant. Add this to your must-have list! Our Longer Life and Black Diamond Sealants lock your extensions in place for a longer period of time.

Lash cleanser. Our eyelash foaming cleanser is oil- and alcohol-free and contains the same pH balance as natural tears, making it perfect even for those with sensitive eyes. Your lashes will always be sparkling clean! If you’re looking for a lash cleansing brush, we have that, too!

Say goodbye to the number of products you’ll have to pack and hello to having more room for souvenirs!

MYTH 5: Salt water is perfectly safe for my lashes.

FACT: Unfortunately, no. Spending too much time in the ocean is not recommended when it comes to your lashes. This is because salt can break the bond of your extension, causing it to detach from your natural lash prematurely. If you already have an ocean vacay on the books, grab your goggles and give your lashes that extra protection!

MYTH 6: My lashes won’t look the same after I go swimming.

FACT: They can, but only if you take care of them. Brushing through your lashes with a clean lash wand and following your normal lash care routine is always recommended after you hit the water. You wash and brush your hair after hitting the pool, right? It’s the same for your lashes. This will keep them looking their absolute best, especially for all of those memorable vacation pics you’ll be taking. Say cheese!

Catching Zzz’s With Lash Extensions: Tips From Our Expert…

Sleeping with lash extensions: Should you sleep on your back? Should you use a certain pillowcase or mask?

Today, we have answers for you, plus some great tips from our incredible training tribe here at The Lash Lounge!

HOW TO SLEEP

When you have eyelash extensions, we recommend you catch your zzz’s on your back. This ensures that each precious lash will stay in place, remain untouched and not encounter any tugging during those nights you find yourself tossing and turning.

If you’re not a back sleeper, we know it may be tough for you. If sleeping on your side is how you’re most comfy, then that’s A-ok, too! Just know that if you are a side sleeper, it is not uncommon if you notice a couple lashes on your pillow from time to time.

HOW NOT TO SLEEP

Stomach sleepers, we have some bad news: Your fave sleep position and lash extensions are not the best match.

To get the longest life out of your lashes, try to avoid sleeping on your stomach because this position will catch your lashes in between you and your pillow, compromising their perfect shape and speeding up the shedding process.

PILLOW TALK

What you have heard is true: The type of pillowcase you choose can have an effect on your lashes.

Cotton

So, what’s the deal with a usual cotton pillowcase? While a cotton pillowcase can feel ultra-soft, cotton causes increased friction between your lashes and the material, resulting in premature lash shedding.

Silk

This brings us to silk pillowcases! Resting your head and lashes on a silk pillowcase is ideal when you have eyelash extensions. Not only will it allow your lashes and the extensions themselves to glide on the surface while you sleep, but you will also avoid any lashes getting caught or pulled like when you use a cotton pillowcase.

Here are some more awesome benefits of sleeping on a silk pillowcase:
It’s better for the hair on your head due to all the tossing and turning you may due at night.
It can help prevent the appearance of facial wrinkles, assist in keeping your skin smooth and help prevent acne!

EYE MASKS: DO THEY HELP?

Many of our guests often wonder if sleeping with an eye mask is a good idea, so we asked our amazing corporate trainer, Ambrielle, about this very topic. She shared, “I have mixed emotions about using masks with lash extensions. I find that the wrong type of mask can cause more harm than good (i.e. smashing the lashes, retention issues, etc.) However, I would recommend the right kind of mask where the socket area is beveled out so there is no direct contact with the mask and the lash extensions.”

So, there you have it! Whether you sleep on your back or rest your tired head on a silk pillowcase, there are ways you can get that much-needed beauty sleep while also keeping each and every lash in place.

Tips & Tricks

Promote Hair and Lash Growth With These 7 Superfoods

Genetics, age and lifestyle are just a few of the things that can play a role in the growth of our hair and even our lashes. And the truth is some of us need a little extra help in this department. Of course, vitamins and growth serums help, but so can something as simple as adding certain foods to our regular diet. Which ones, you ask? We’re dishing them out below!

1. AVOCADOS

If you love a good guacamole or simply just enjoy eating avocado, then you’re already on the right track. Full of vitamin E, avocados are a great food source because they offer antioxidants that keep free radicals in check. This helps fight oxidative stress in our bodies, which is good because this stress is a big contributor to hair loss. Adding this food to your diet can help relieve your body of that stress and keep those locks flowing.

Fatty acids are also found in this superfood; if our bodies are lacking these, they can play a role in how much our hair can grow. Since we do not produce fatty acids in our body naturally, eating avocados is a surefire nutrition win!

2. SWEET POTATOES

Did you know that biotin, vitamin A, vitamin B5 (among many more) are found in sweet potatoes? These not only keep your hair and lashes healthy, but also growing! Sure, you could take supplements that contain all of the above, but simply incorporating sweet potatoes into your diet on a regular basis sounds like way more fun!

If you have heard of biotin, you probably remember hearing it in conversations about hair. In fact, biotin is often referred to as the “H” vitamin, which is a nickname from two German words: haar and haut. What do these two words mean? Hair and skin!

3. NUTS

“Sometimes you feel like a nut”…you know the rest. Nuts are amazing for hair and lash growth. Adding nuts of all kind to your daily diet is an easy way to get the vitamin E, fatty acids and amino acids that your lashes and hair so desperately need in order to stay healthy and keep growing.

One amino acid in particular called l-arginine is actually a form of protein which is often used to help treat hair loss and even baldness. Whether you like cashews, almonds, peanuts or any nut, each type consumed in a healthy portion is so very good for you.

You know what we love most about this food? Many types of nuts are often packaged in great, single-serving sizes, making them ideal for carrying with you on the go.

4. SALMON

This seafood favorite is another that is highly rich in omega-3 fatty acids and is good for our eyes, bones, brain function and so much more. When consumed often, it can be truly incredible when it comes to the thickness and overall growth of our lashes and hair.

Along with the many other minerals and vital vitamins our bodies need, salmon is rich in vitamin B and D, which promote the growth of hair and eyelashes. Whether you’re dining in or out, be sure to add some salmon to the menu!

5. MUSHROOMS

Most people either love or hate mushrooms. Which camp are you in? If you are a mushroom fan, then you’re in luck! For every cup of cooked mushrooms, you could get approximately 40% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin B3, which is known to rehydrate and nourish the hair follicles in order to make them stronger.

If you have brittle hair, then foods like mushrooms are a no-brainer! Whether you sauté them, throw them in a salad or get creative in the kitchen, add some mushrooms to the mix. Your hair and lashes WILL thank you!

6. EGGS

Scrambled, hard boiled, poached—how do you like your eggs? If you are a fan of this protein-rich food, then you’re already in the hair-growth game. That’s because our hair (and lashes) are greatly made up of proteins. If our bodies are protein-deficient, then our hair and lashes can greatly suffer. So, eat those eggs, people!

If you’re more of an egg white person, high-fives to you. However, to get the full benefits of all the goodness eggs have to offer, eat both the white and the yolk.

7. GREEK YOGURT (WITH A DASH OF CINNAMON, TOO!)

One vitamin you’ll see a lot in hair products is vitamin B5. It’s no accident; B5 promotes not just the overall health of hair, but also its growth! We’ll give you one guess what food is also full of this source. Yep, Greek yogurt! Eat it with your favorite fruit or healthy toppings or add it to a smoothie to get that helpful serving in each day.

No matter how you like to eat it, you’ll also be giving your body an extra boost of vitamin D, known to help our lashes and lovely locks grow longer and stay healthy.

Wait! One last question: Do you like cinnamon? If you do, then dash some of this delicious spice onto your Greek yogurt because it can help your hair, too. Cinnamon supports the increase of blood flow in our bodies; when more oxygen and nutrients are getting to our hair follicles, the faster, stronger and longer our hair can grow!

Raise your hand (or bat your lashes) if you learned something today! All in all, when your hair is healthy and growing, then your lashes will be, too.

So, have your splurges here and there (hello, Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey) but try, try, try to add these foods (and many of the other beneficial superfoods) to your diet however you can. Your hair, health and wellness will reap the benefits!

Spring Lash Shedding + What You Need to Know

Never heard of lash shedding? Wondering what it is, what happens and why during certain seasons? Good news—you’re not alone! Since spring has officially sprung, we’re sharing why you might be more likely to find a stray lash here and there this season.

WHAT IS LASH SHEDDING?

Whether you have lash extensions or not, we all experience lash shedding. Remember when you were young and noticed a single lash hair on your cheek and then you would make a wish? Yes, that was lash shedding in action!

This natural occurrence happens to everyone. Our lashes fall out in cycles, completely replenishing approximately every 60–90 days. But don’t be alarmed! This is a healthy part of our hair-growth routine. In fact, on average, we lose up to 20% of our natural lashes every two weeks; depending on our own individual hair-growth cycles, a person can shed between 1 and 5 natural eyelashes a day.

A new eyelash has already been growing to replace the lash that falls out and for most of us, we don’t even notice!

WHY DOES LASH SHEDDING HAPPEN? (AND WHY IN THE SPRING?)

While we experience lash shedding year-round, many of us notice that our lashes shed more during certain seasons, like in the spring. Why does this happen and why during this time of year? It’s really quite simple. During the spring season, our bodies start preparing for warmer temps and warmer weather. It’s during this natural process that our body will increase oil production to help keep not only our hair, but also our skin from getting dehydrated. So, it is common for all of us to experience additional shedding with not just our hair, but also our lashes.

WHAT TO DO + WHAT TO KNOW

There’s not much you can do to prevent lash shedding, since it is after all a natural process. But something to keep in mind is that when your natural lashes shed, your extensions shed with them. But as long as you keep up with your regular lash refill appointments every 2–3 weeks, your lash line will stay full and gorgeous just how you like it!

Another key thing to remember when experiencing the lash shedding cycle is to keep your lash extensions clean. Since spring is a big time for allergies, this can cause additional buildup to increase on and around your lash line. Use a lash extension-safe cleanser to keep them squeaky clean. It’s always a good idea to brush your lashes each day with a clean lash wand, too.

All in all, this is a natural process and no cause for alarm—we promise! Just as certain animals shed their winter coats, so do us humans, just in a different way.

If you do have lash extensions and ever have a concern about how many lashes you are shedding, chat with your lash stylist. After all, they are the experts when it comes to all things lashes and they are there to put your mind at ease and offer tips every step of the way!

Store-Bought vs. Salon-Quality Lashes: What’s the Difference?

Attention Lash Lovers! If you have ever wondered what makes lashes you can purchase at the store different from lashes you get professionally done at a salon, we’re sharing the inside scoop!

LONGEVITY: WHICH LAST LONGER?

Typically, store-bought lash products are made for temporary application, meaning you wear them once, then toss them out. When you get them professionally applied at a salon like The Lash Lounge, they’ll last anywhere from weeks to months! As long you keep them clean and keep your hands away from your eyes as much as possible, then only when your natural lash hairs shed will your lash extensions shed with them.

APPLICATION: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Another difference is that the lashes you purchase at the store must be self-applied. This can require patience, skill and often leads to frustration when you cannot get those darn strips on straight! We love a good DIY project, but not when it comes to our lashes!

The beauty of visiting a reputable salon to have your lashes applied is that you get to lay back, relax and let trained experts work their magic.

Unlike the store-bought lash extensions, our lashes are individually applied to single natural hairs with a medical-grade adhesive. So, not only is the quality itself better, visiting a salon gives you the opportunity to let the experts give you a natural, voluminous-looking lash line.

Speaking of quality, here at The Lash Lounge, our lashes are made of premium synthetic material. Unlike store-bought lashes, our lashes are waterproof, sweatproof, showerproof and, when applied properly, will last until the natural hair sheds and both it and the extension fall out. Psst…don’t be that girl at the pool with a lash strip hanging off your eye! Instead splish, splash and enjoy all of your water activities with your luxurious lash extensions in place, minus an embarrassing lash mishap or mascara running down your face. (That’s never pretty, ladies!)

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH MAGNETIC LASHES?

There are a number of store bought options when it comes to lashes, such as lash strips, individual lash tabs, and the latest product…magnetic lashes, which we’ve been getting some questions about.

Just like store-bought lash strips, magnetic lashes offer a temporary, self-application option for lashes. They also use tiny magnets to sandwich your natural lashes between two strips and, aside from being very difficult to attach properly (and keep in place), they can weigh your natural lashes down.

Not only that, magnetic strip lashes can cause your natural lashes to break off or prematurely fall out (yikes!). Due to the hassle of getting them applied properly on your own and the damage that can be made to your natural lashes, we do not recommend magnetic lashes.

After all this, we know there’s something to that age-old saying: You get what you pay for! And it’s O.K. to invest in yourselves—especially when that means a luxurious beauty service that will give you gorgeous, salon-quality lashes. That’s not to mention the many precious minutes you’ll regain in the morning by simplifying your morning makeup routine. Who’s up for some extra zzzz’s?

3 Simple Steps to Keeping Your Lash Extensions Clean

One of the questions we get asked most often is ‘how do I clean my lashes?’ Some may think that it’s a more in depth process when it comes to cleaning your lash extensions but we’re here to tell you that it’s not much of a process at all. In fact, it’s just 3 simple steps …

STEP ONE:

  • Splash your eyes with lukewarm water and then gently massage an oil-free makeup remover around your upper and lower lid lines.
  • Splash again until all product is rinsed away.
  • NOTE: Visit a Lash Lounge near you to purchase one of our oil-free, lash extension safe makeup removers!

STEP TWO:

  • Apply an oil-free makeup remover to a clean brush and gently wash in a downward motion over the eyelid and lash-line.
  • Rinse with fresh water until all product is removed.
  • NOTE: Never rub back and forth as this will be too abrasive on the lash extensions.

STEP THREE:

  • Gently pat the skin around your eyelashes with a lint-free towel or microfiber towel (we recommend The Original MakeUp Eraser) and then just let your lashes air dry.
  • Last but not least, brush through your lashes with a clean mascara wand to separate and fluff.

4 Facts About Lash Shedding

Every hair on our body follows a specific growth cycle, including our eyelashes. Lash shedding is a healthy part of the hair growth process and should not be cause for alarm—yes, even with lash extensions! Today, we’re sharing 4 facts about lash shedding and the natural cycle.

The Natural Lash Shedding Cycle

Did you know?

  1. On average, a person can lose up to 20% of their natural lashes every two weeks.
  2. Natural eyelashes grow in and fall out in cycles, which occurs every 60 to 90 days.
  3. Depending on their individual lash growth cycles, a person can typically shed between 1 and 5 natural lashes every day.
  4. A new eyelash has already been growing to replace the lash that falls out and for most of us, we don’t even notice.

If you have ever noticed how your hair sheds more during certain seasons, you’re not alone! This is called “seasonal molting” and it’s completely natural. You can read more about it here.

Your Natural Lashes + Lash Extensions

When eyelashes are extended with quality semi-permanent extensions (like we use here at The Lash Lounge), it will be more noticeable when these lashes shed because they are longer and darker than your natural lashes. But, don’t worry, lash extensions should only shed when your natural lash has reached the end of its cycle, so no damage to your natural lashes here!

How does it work?

When a trained stylist applies a set of classic lash extensions, one lash extension is attached to your natural eyelash. In volume, we attach a handmade fan of 2 or more lash extensions to your natural eyelash. In hybrid, it’s a combo of the two. You’ll notice that when your natural lash sheds, so goes the lash extensions(s)!

FUN FACT…WHO KNEW? All hairs, including eyelashes, replace themselves every few years.

Tips & Tricks

Tips on Brushing and Cleaning Your Lashes (and Why…

When you have lash extensions, the overall upkeep is very minimal and very easy to manage if you clean and brush them regularly. So do the following (plus visit your salon for refill appointments every 2–3 weeks) and your lashes will stay looking full and fabulous!

Brush Your Lashes Daily

Brush your lashes daily to prevent crisscrossing. A simple 15–20 second sweep through your lashes in the morning will put stray lashes in their place. Make sure you’re gentle when brushing your eyelash extensions, as you don’t want to tug at them if they are tangled or overlapping. And take a quick peek to make sure your lash wand is clean. We don’t want any clumpy mascara getting in the way of that smooth sweep!

BONUS! Brushing your lashes each day helps your extensions last longer.

Keep Your Lashes Clean

When you clean your lashes regularly, you are helping to keep your natural oils at bay. Cleansing regularly also helps prevent premature lash shedding. Cleanse your lashes daily with a gentle, lash extension-friendly cleanser and make sure it’s oil- and alcohol-free!

THE SCARY TRUTH: When you skip your daily lash wash, your lash follicles can get clogged with oil, dirt and debris, which can make it difficult for new lashes to grow.

Despite this, it’s not uncommon for lash stylists to see guests with severe build-up of makeup residue, oil and/or dead skin cells along their lash lines. This is not only unhygienic, but it can also cut into your appointment time because your stylist must make sure they’re squeaky clean before performing your refill.

5 Things Lash Stylists Want Their Clients To Know

If you’re a lash extension veteran, then your lash stylist has most likely educated you on the best ways to care for your lashes, products you can/cannot use and all the other important ‘dos and dont’s’ that come with having lash extensions. But there are some other important things that lash stylists want YOU, their clients to know . . .

Be Upfront

Don’t be afraid to share any discomfort or concerns with your stylist during your service. They are there to not only make your lashes look fabulous, but they also want to make sure you have the best lash experience possible. If you have any discomfort or irritation during your service, tell your stylist so she can make you comfortable. Also be sure to reach out to your salon/stylist after your service, if by chance you experience an allergic reaction, redness or simply have a question you forgot to mention before you left. They are the experts after-all, so don’t hesitate to share any concerns during or after your service.

Don’t Expect The Same Results As Your Friends

Your stylist will always strive to give you the lash look you desire. However, if your friend has lash extensions with extreme, voluminous fullness and you want the same but your lashes don’t end up looking as full as hers, there’s a reason. Clients who already have a naturally full lash line will end up with an even more extreme, full lash line after having extensions applied. If your natural lash line isn’t as full, then your lash extensions may not have the same fullness as your friend’s lashes. The more natural lash hairs you have, the more extensions can be applied. So to sum it up, your stylist wants you to understand that they will work with the natural hairs YOU have and give you the best results possible, however your lash look and your bff’s lash look may not always look the same….and now you know why.

Keep Chatter to a Minimum

While it’s always fun to catch up with your fav, fabulous lash stylist, too much chatting can make her job more difficult. Why? For one, it’s always very important to be as still as possible during the application process and allow your stylist to focus on the precise technique she needs to master during your service. Second, this needs to be a relaxing experience for you. If you and your stylist chat the entire time, then you may not get to enjoy that amazing lash nap we all love. However, if it’s your stylist that’s doing most of the talking, remember to take headphones to keep the talking to minimum, or like we mentioned in #1, be upfront and kindly tell your stylist you’ve had a long day and that you’d prefer to just relax and not chat too much. She will gladly understand!

Don’t Leave It All Up To Your Stylist

If you don’t do your part and take care of your lashes, then your lash stylist can’t do her job to the fullest. If you don’t clean, comb and care for your lashes properly, then your stylist may not always be able to give you the results you want. They will try of course, but if they have to spend time cleaning and separating dirty lashes, then this means less time getting your lashes back to the look you love. If you have lost a great deal of lashes due to poor care or if you don’t keep up with your 2-3 week refill appointments, then your stylist may recommend a full, new set. So be good to yourself, your lashes and your stylist by taking proper care of your extensions and schedule regular refills. (Pssst . . . It’s now easier than ever to book your appointments with our new, convenient on-line booking system.)

Listen To Your Stylist

Remember that the stylists are the experts! They do this every day, for hours a day. Listen to them and any tips or feedback they may give you during your appointment. You make an investment in your lash extensions and your stylists knows it and wants to help you keep that investment looking full and fabulous!
