Saunas (whether it’s a hot, steamy room or an infrared space) are known for soothing sore muscles, promoting relaxation and even helping to clear out your pores. Many describe the experience as a warm, comforting hug that leaves you feeling refreshed and renewed!

But what if you have lash extensions? Here’s the deal: going in the sauna with lash extensions isn’t always lash-friendly. Too much sweat or steam can shorten their life, so let’s get into the sauna-proof tips that keep them looking fresh!

Can You Go in a Sauna with Lash Extensions?

Yes, you can go in a sauna with lash extensions, but you MUST take precautions. The heat, humidity and sweat can:

  • Weaken the adhesive that holds your lash extensions perfectly in place
  • Cause your natural lashes and extensions to become brittle, clumpy and even shed prematurely

Let’s take a deeper dive into the risks below!

Why Saunas Are a Risk for Your Lash Extensions

When you get eyelash extensions, the extension is adhered to your natural lash with medical-grade adhesive across your entire lash line. While the adhesive is strong and durable to keep the extensions in place, it CAN react when exposed to certain elements such as:

  • Saunas (traditional steamy saunas as well as infrared due to the heat it supplies)
  • Hot and humid climates (like tropical vacay spots)
  • Sweat (the salt and oils from our body are not friendly with lash extensions)

Here is what should be done before, during and after going into a sauna with lash extensions

woman applying a lash sealant

Before:

  • After your first full set of lash extensions, you need to wait at least 8 hours before exposing them to any kind of moisture. Steam and sweat included!
  • Before you hit the sauna, be sure to apply a professional lash sealant to your lash line to give your lashes a strong layer of protection. Our recommendation: Lash Armor Onyx.

During:

  • Wear protective goggles for extra safety.
  • Try to limit your time in the sauna to 5–10 minutes.
  • Do not sit directly in front of steam or a heating element.

After:

  • Avoid rubbing your face and eyes with a towel.
  • Use a lint-free cloth to gently pat your eye area and lashes dry.
  • Gently give your lashes a brush with a clean lash wand

FAQs

Can I go in a sauna with lash extensions right after application?

No. You should avoid the sauna for at least 8 hours after getting lash extensions. This waiting period allows the adhesive to fully bond with your natural lashes.

Will using a sauna ruin my lash extensions?

A sauna can ruin your lash extensions if you do not protect them by using a professional lash sealant, goggles for extra protection and cleaning them properly following your session.

Is it safer to use an infrared sauna with lash extensions?

Not necessarily. Infrared saunas still produce heat that can be damaging to lash extensions if they are not protected with a professional lash sealant.

How can I protect my lash extensions in a sauna?

You can protect lash extensions in a sauna by limiting your time to 5–10 minutes, avoiding direct steam or heat, applying a professional lash sealant and cleansing afterward with an oil-free cleanser.

What should I do if my lash extensions shed after a sauna session?

Avoid pulling any loose lashes and continue your usual cleansing and aftercare process until you are able to get back in with your stylist for a lash refill.
