Fall Lash Shedding: How to Care for Your Eyelash…

October is officially here and fall is in the air! But what do we dread about our favorite season? Fall lash shedding. Today, we’re sharing why this happens and what you can do in order to keep your lashes lush and full! #yourewelcome

WHAT IS LASH SHEDDING?

Remember when you’d make a wish after noticing a fallen lash? Yes, that was lash shedding and we all experience it, even with lash extensions.

Even though they completely replenish and regrow every 60–90 days, our lashes fall out in cycles. But don’t worry, this IS a healthy part of our hair-growth routine. On average, we lose up to 20% of our natural lashes every two weeks and, depending on our individual hair-growth, we can shed between 1 and 5 natural eyelashes per day.

The cool thing is that right at this very moment you have a new eyelash growing to replace a lash that fell out and, for the majority of us, this is a process that we hardly notice.

FALL LASH SHEDDING: WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

You know how some animals shed their winter coats? Well, it’s mostly the same for us and lash shedding!

Why does this happen and why this time of year? As fall approaches and the seasons and temperatures begin to change, so does the humidity. This change is what can alter our lash growth cycle and can be the reason we notice a few fallen lashes here and there.

During this time, our bodies are increasing oil production to keep not only our hair, but also our skin from getting dehydrated. Just like it’s not uncommon for us to notice additional shedding with the hair on our head this time of year, it’s the same with our lashes.

HOW DOES LASH SHEDDING AFFECT EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

Here’s the deal: Lash shedding does not magically stop when you have extensions. It’s important to know that when you have a natural eyelash that sheds, your extension will go with it. For all of us, each individual eyelash is programmed to reach a certain length, fall out, then regrow, taking the extension along for the ride.

But, there’s good news! As long as you keep up with your lash refill appointments every 2–3 weeks (like the good lash guest we know you are…wink, wink), your lash line will stay full and gorgeous!

EYELASH EXTENSION CARE DURING THE SHEDDING CYCLE

Keep Your Lashes Clean

When you notice your lashes are shedding, one important thing to do is to keep your extensions clean. Why? During a seasonal change, additional buildup can accumulate along your lash line. To prevent this, use a lash extension-safe cleanser like our special eyelash foaming cleanser that will not only keep your lashes squeaky clean, but can also be used as an all-over facial cleanser. Talk about a win-win!

Another quick tip: Brush your lashes daily with a clean lash wand. This will keep your lashes in place and help to brush away any residue that may have landed along your lash line.

Use A Lash Sealant

Investing in a lash sealant is a good idea year-round, especially during the fall season. While it will not keep your lashes from shedding, a sealant will extend the life of the adhesive, locking your extensions in place for a longer period of time. Just think of it as an extra layer of protection for your lashes during the fall lash shedding season.

We have 2 sealants here at The Lash Lounge:
Our Black Diamond Sealant is a daily-use product that add a dark sheen and extends the life of your extensions. Our Protecting Sealant is used twice a week and is perfect for those with active lifestyles, anyone who lives in high humidity areas and those with oily skin.

Do yourself a favor and snag one of these “must-have” sealants during your next appointment. You’ll thank us later!

Keep Up with Your Lash Refills

Like we’ve mentioned before, it’s so important you do not miss a lash refill appointment…like, ever! Coming in for refills every 2 weeks will allow you to maintain that voluptuous lash look you love, even during the lash shedding cycle. Check out our membership options to make it even easier!

Spring Lash Shedding + What You Need to Know

Never heard of lash shedding? Wondering what it is, what happens and why during certain seasons? Good news—you’re not alone! Since spring has officially sprung, we’re sharing why you might be more likely to find a stray lash here and there this season.

WHAT IS LASH SHEDDING?

Whether you have lash extensions or not, we all experience lash shedding. Remember when you were young and noticed a single lash hair on your cheek and then you would make a wish? Yes, that was lash shedding in action!

This natural occurrence happens to everyone. Our lashes fall out in cycles, completely replenishing approximately every 60–90 days. But don’t be alarmed! This is a healthy part of our hair-growth routine. In fact, on average, we lose up to 20% of our natural lashes every two weeks; depending on our own individual hair-growth cycles, a person can shed between 1 and 5 natural eyelashes a day.

A new eyelash has already been growing to replace the lash that falls out and for most of us, we don’t even notice!

WHY DOES LASH SHEDDING HAPPEN? (AND WHY IN THE SPRING?)

While we experience lash shedding year-round, many of us notice that our lashes shed more during certain seasons, like in the spring. Why does this happen and why during this time of year? It’s really quite simple. During the spring season, our bodies start preparing for warmer temps and warmer weather. It’s during this natural process that our body will increase oil production to help keep not only our hair, but also our skin from getting dehydrated. So, it is common for all of us to experience additional shedding with not just our hair, but also our lashes.

WHAT TO DO + WHAT TO KNOW

There’s not much you can do to prevent lash shedding, since it is after all a natural process. But something to keep in mind is that when your natural lashes shed, your extensions shed with them. But as long as you keep up with your regular lash refill appointments every 2–3 weeks, your lash line will stay full and gorgeous just how you like it!

Another key thing to remember when experiencing the lash shedding cycle is to keep your lash extensions clean. Since spring is a big time for allergies, this can cause additional buildup to increase on and around your lash line. Use a lash extension-safe cleanser to keep them squeaky clean. It’s always a good idea to brush your lashes each day with a clean lash wand, too.

All in all, this is a natural process and no cause for alarm—we promise! Just as certain animals shed their winter coats, so do us humans, just in a different way.

If you do have lash extensions and ever have a concern about how many lashes you are shedding, chat with your lash stylist. After all, they are the experts when it comes to all things lashes and they are there to put your mind at ease and offer tips every step of the way!

4 Facts About Lash Shedding

Every hair on our body follows a specific growth cycle, including our eyelashes. Lash shedding is a healthy part of the hair growth process and should not be cause for alarm—yes, even with lash extensions! Today, we’re sharing 4 facts about lash shedding and the natural cycle.

The Natural Lash Shedding Cycle

Did you know?

  1. On average, a person can lose up to 20% of their natural lashes every two weeks.
  2. Natural eyelashes grow in and fall out in cycles, which occurs every 60 to 90 days.
  3. Depending on their individual lash growth cycles, a person can typically shed between 1 and 5 natural lashes every day.
  4. A new eyelash has already been growing to replace the lash that falls out and for most of us, we don’t even notice.

If you have ever noticed how your hair sheds more during certain seasons, you’re not alone! This is called “seasonal molting” and it’s completely natural. You can read more about it here.

Your Natural Lashes + Lash Extensions

When eyelashes are extended with quality semi-permanent extensions (like we use here at The Lash Lounge), it will be more noticeable when these lashes shed because they are longer and darker than your natural lashes. But, don’t worry, lash extensions should only shed when your natural lash has reached the end of its cycle, so no damage to your natural lashes here!

How does it work?

When a trained stylist applies a set of classic lash extensions, one lash extension is attached to your natural eyelash. In volume, we attach a handmade fan of 2 or more lash extensions to your natural eyelash. In hybrid, it’s a combo of the two. You’ll notice that when your natural lash sheds, so goes the lash extensions(s)!

FUN FACT…WHO KNEW? All hairs, including eyelashes, replace themselves every few years.
