How Old Is Too Old? When to Toss Your…

Confession: We have (and shamefully still do) use makeup that we probably should be tossing out. It’s an easy habit to fall into when we’re SO busy and we can just grab what’s already in our makeup bags. Are we right, ladies? It’s not that we’re purposely trying to keep using these expired products; it’s just that we really don’t give it much thought.

The saying “When you know better, you do better.” is true, which is why today we’re sharing some tips on how to determine if your cosmetics need to get the boot. So, get that makeup bag out—it’s time to purge!

1. LIP PRODUCTS

Some of us just don’t feel like ourselves without a pretty pout. Whether it’s our go-to daily color or the occasional rosy red, how do you know if your lipstick or gloss is still good and safe to wear?

A recent article on dermstore.com touched on this very topic with Dermatologist Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse, who suggested that if you use the same lipstick every day, then it’s a good idea to get a new one every 6 to 12 months.

If the shade of the lipstick is not its original color, if it seems dry or is cracked and hard to apply, them that’s when you should say so long. If nothing else, it gives you a great excuse to hit up your favorite beauty store or website and load up on the latest shades!

2. FOUNDATION + CONCEALERS

Would you believe it if we told you that covering your face with an expired foundation or concealer could actually harm your skin? It’s true.

A sign that your foundation is old and out of date is when you go to apply it and you notice that the foundation itself is clumpy or starts to separate. Another tell-tale sign is if you notice that the color and consistency has changed and/or if it smells bad.

So, what’s the shelf life of foundations and cream-based face makeup? Byrdie.com suggests 6 months to 1 year.

3. MASCARA

Here at The Lash Lounge (and thanks to lash extensions, of course), we rarely use mascara. If we do, it’s one of our lash extension-friendly mascaras. Whether you use mascara each and every day or once in a blue moon, it’s important to know when to toss it out.

Since mascara is something we apply, insert back into the tube, then usually apply again, this means that it’s more likely to carry bacteria—YUCK! That’s why we recommend replacing it every 3 months, especially if you use it regularly.

Signs that your mascara simply is not good anymore are if it’s turned into a clumpy, thick or dried formula, it’s discolored and/or has a foul odor.

4. NAIL POLISH

Who else is hanging their heads in shame on this one? If you’re like us and you know you’ve got bottles that are SUPER old, you’re not alone! Nail polish is one of those products we collect over the years and, for some reason, just can’t let go (we love all the pretty colors!).

When it comes to polish, it’s usually pretty easy to tell when you’ve got an old bottle on your hands. When it’s sticky, overly thick, dry, it applies poorly or has changed color, it’s time to pitch it.

Even if none of the above symptoms pop up, just like mascara, it’s also unsanitary to keep old polish that you use on the regular. The formula can contain and continually grow bacteria, so it’s a good (and safe) idea to toss out and replace your favorite shades every 1–2 years, tops!

Makeup may vary when it comes to shelf life, but if you pay attention to the products themselves, it’s pretty easy to recognize when it’s time to toss them. And when that time comes, go ahead and pitch them right then so you don’t hang on to it for another year.

Need a quick rundown? You got it! See below for the products we’ve discussed and when to replace ’em:

  • LIP PRODUCTS: Every 6 to 12 months
  • FOUNDATION + CONCEALERS: Every 6 to 12 months
  • MASCARA: Every 3 months
  • NAIL POLISH: Every 1 to 2 years

Cosmetics and Beauty Products: Which Ones Are Lash Extension-Friendly?

When we welcome new guests to The Lash Lounge to receive their first full set of lashes, we often answer questions and share tips about cosmetics and products that are okay and not okay to use with lash extensions.

Though there won’t be too much of an adjustment to your daily routine, not all products are lash extension-safe. Today, we’re giving you the scoop on which ones get the green light and which to stay away from. Take note, ladies!

COSMETICS: DO’S, DON’TS + TIPS

First, we’re going to let you in on a little secret: After getting lash extensions, most of our guests actually find they don’t need to wear as much makeup because they discover that their new extensions are a great alternative. Hooray for that! However, we know makeup is oh-so-fun and a great way to express yourself, so for our makeup-loving guests, we say get your glam on!

When you have lash extensions, you can wear your usual face makeup, eyeliner, eyeshadow and even mascara, as long as it’s all lash extension friendly and all are not oil or alcohol based. If you apply face powders and eyeshadows, keep in mind that residue can flake off onto your lashes.

Tip #1: If you wear eye makeup, gently brush through your lashes with your lash wand immediately after applying any powdery type of makeup. This will brush out any flakes or residue that landed on your lash line while applying.

Tip #2: For those of you who are mascara fans, be sure to only use a water-based mascara. You can even purchase one of the two mascara options we carry in our salons: our Ultimate Volume Mascara and our Lengthening Mascara.

PRODUCTS: WHAT YOU CAN & CAN’T USE

Other products you need to be sure to shy away from when you have lash extensions include any products that are oil- or alcohol-based. Products like lotions, creams and moisturizers that contain oils are not good to use on or near the lash line. Why, you ask? Products that contain oil can break down the bond of the extension adhesive, which can then cause it to detach from your natural lash. This will shorten the life of your lash extensions. No thank you!

Tip #3: When it comes to cleansing products, pay attention to the ingredients and do not use any alcohol-based products.

Tip #4: Use one of our cleansing products that are not only lash extension-safe but are gentle and perfect for cleansing not only your eye area and, but your whole face! We have our Special Eye and Makeup Remover which has the same pH balance as natural tears, making it ideal for those with sensitive eyes.  Then we have our Eye Makeup Remover Gel, which works on all skin types. Both are formulated to work with eyelash extensions and each cleanser is gentle enough to use as an all-over makeup remover.  Cheers for cutting down on the number of bottles on our vanities!

__________________________________________________________________________

In order to extend the life of your lashes and keep your extensions in tip-top shape, make sure you take a look at the ingredient list of the cosmetics and products you are using. You’ve made an investment in your lashes and you definitely want to protect them!

As always, ask your lash stylist any questions you have about the cosmetics and products you’re using. You can even bring them in with you during your next appointment and let us take a look!

6 Ways to Transform the Usual Smoky Eye

One of the easiest ways to glam up any look  is with a great smoky eye. Consider stepping outside of the box this holiday season and try one of these unique looks below to transform the usual smoky eye into a show stopping look.

Emerald Smoky Eyes

Instead of making a statement with the usual red lip, make one with a bold smoky eye, but in green. The perfect green eyeshadow paired with volume lashes will make any holiday look pop, just as we see below on actress and singer, Lucy Hale.

(image via allure.com)

Smoky Wings

Bringing the smoky shadow out along the corners of each eyelid gives an even more dramatic, smokier look with a sultry wing effect, which is sure to take your holiday glam game up a notch! Just see how fabulous this look is on model, Bella Hadid.

(image via sports.yahoo.com)

Subtly Smoky

Because sometimes less IS more, we love the idea of a subtle smoky eye, as seen below on Eiza González. A faint eyeshadow with a hint of shimmer is the way to go to achieve this elegant look.

(image via birdie.com)

Smoky Gold

A gilded smoky eye never looked so good, just as we see below on Nicole Richie who completed her look with classic, full lashes. Try ‘going for the gold’ this season and select a shadow with a shimmery gold tone and try this look for yourself!

(image via allure.com)

Smoke ‘n Glitter

A smoky eye should never be limited to only dark gray shades, but can work beautifully when glittery, warm tones are used. Just see how fabulous Emma Stone’s eyes look! We also really love how the smoky look was not just applied to her top lid, but also underneath along her lower lash line for an even more sultry look. #bowchicawowwow

Blue Smoky Eyes

Try taking the usual smoky eye up a notch by accenting the look with a pop of blue in the inner corners, just as Kelly Rowland did. Then of course, her lashes complete the look with the perfect amount of length and curl.

And it also saves you the hassle of filling in your brows – which is a huge time saver! “Swap your basic black eyeliner and even shadow for eye-brightening blues, from cobalt to cerulean,” says Good Housekeeping’s Beauty Director April Franzino. “Make it less ’80s by blending a thin line of blue above your regular black on top lids or wearing a sheer wash of slate up to your crease only.” Copy Lupita Nyong’o’s BAFTA Awards look with a bold red lip, or go light on lip and cheek colors to keep things balanced and wearable. Voluminous Lower Lashes

If you find that your pencil liner gets a little smudgy by the middle of the day, don’t wipe it off — just mimic Emmy Rossum and embrace it, because this ’90s grunge look is trending like crazy. (via goodhousekeeping.com)

Two-Tone Eyeshadow

One of the boldest red carpet eye makeup looks in recent memory was when Scarlett Johansson stepped out at the Avengers premiere. 7 Time-Saving Makeup Tips For Women On The Go

We all know there are just some days when we have to get out the door in a hurry and we don’t have all morning for a long, extensive beauty routine. If you’re a woman on the go, keep it simple and try these 7 time saving makeup tips.

1.  Start With The Eyes

Eyeshadow fall-out has the potential to mess up your makeup, so don’t let it. Start with your eyeshadow and you won’t waste any precious time clearing up the aftermath, especially if you’re dabbling with colourful pigments or glitter. (via escentual.com)

2. Stick with Neutral Tones

If a bold lip isn’t really your thing and you can’t afford to think too long and hard about your color palette – just go with all neutral colors for your entire face, like tan, taupe, and peach. Chances are they’ll all go together. (via popsugar.com)

3. Choose a Tinted Moisturizer

A tinted moisturizer is a saving grace when you’re short on time. Not only does it need little-to-no blending but it’ll give your skin a boost of hydration, which means you can skip moisturizer if you’re really in a rush. (via escentual.com)

4. Make Your Pout Pop

If you’ve really pushed it or overslept, just reach for one product: red lipstick. Even if you wear nothing else and just a red pout, you’ll look miraculously put together and glamorous. Plus, you can put it on while you’re riding the elevator up to your office.. (via popsugar.com)

5. Think Pink!

A pop of pink on the apples of your cheek give you that instant face brightening you’re looking for to enhance your gorgeous complexion. (via shop.mymakeupbrushes.com)

6. Skip Liquid Liner

Nobody has time to clean up a messy line in the morning. Go for a pencil liner which will give you the flexibility to not need a perfect line. Smudge the line and you’re good to go — perfection. (via shop.mymakeupbrushes.com)

7. Say So Long to Mascara

Who has time for mascara in the morning? Your daily beauty routine can become even more simplified by getting lash extensions. Whether you want a classic, natural look or lots of volume and fluff, lash extensions will not only save you time but many women often find that they don’t even need to wear as much makeup at all!

6 Summer Makeup Looks We Love

From a warm summer glow to sparkling silver eyes, here are 6 summer makeup looks we are currently loving!

1. Bronze Only Blush

Since your skin will be living in a perpetual state of flush for most of the summer anyway, swap your usual layer of cream blush for an iridescent bronzer to give your complexion a warm, just-napped-on-the-beach look. After an hour in the sun—or, let’s be honest, 60 seconds in your hot car–the bronzer will melt into your skin for a naturally glowy, dewy finish. (via marieclaire.com)

2. Slick ‘n Shiny Lips

It’s baaaaaaack. With better technology allowing for makeup companies to create more luxurious, non-goopy lip glosses and innovative oil-based lipstick formulas, shiny lips are making a slow and steady comeback after years of people obsessing over super-matte mouths. And there’s no right or wrong way to wear the look. Pair it with eye shadow or have it be your single makeup statement. (via allure.com)

3. Aqua Tinted Eyes

Build turquoise eyeliner up along the lower lashline for an intense kick of colour. (via: cosmopolitan.com)

The perfect blue liner can be tricky to find, so click here to see some great shades from Sephora.

4. The Sunset Look

Combine a vibrant lip color in shades of bougainvillea, hot coral, or orange-red with eyeshadows and liners in sunny yellow, marigold, or copper, the color-changing aspects of a spectacular sunset are represented without looking garish. (via refinery29.com)

5. Slashes of Silver

Normally associated with the cooler months and winter holidays, silver is an unexpected metallic for the summer months, especially when it’s free of chunky or obvious glitter. And when worn with subtle pink cheeks and lips and easy hair, silver can look just as sexy as the warmest, most smoldering bronze or copper shadow. (via: allure.com)
For more summer eye makeup looks you might like, check this out!

6. Metallic Eyeshadow

Bright, glitter-flecked eyeshadow can quickly veer into Studio 54 territory as soon as you start to perspire, but a bright, metallic cream shadow only looks better the hotter you get. If coppers and reds feel too bold, try tapping the same cream shadow over your lips and the apples of your cheeks, too, to balance out the eyes and tie the whole look together. (via marieclaire.com)

Meghan Markle’s Big Day Beauty Look and How to…

There was so much to be in awe of over the weekend when it came to the Royal Wedding, but our number one awe inspiring moment was when we first saw the bride. Meghan Markle stayed true to her sense of style keeping her big day look classic, modern and not overdone. Same went for her makeup and since it’s officially wedding season, we’re breaking down her big day beauty look and how you can get the same look for your big day – or simply everyday!

One guess what our favorite part of her look was . . . her lashes and brows, of course!

FACE

Her Look: Gorgeous and glowing, the bride went for a natural look when it came to her face. She’s all about letting her freckles show, therefor she didn’t try to cover them up. While she skipped the heavy foundation, her makeup artist for the wedding (Daniel Martin) did add a bit of concealer under her eye.

Get The Look: Meghan’s said she’s a fan of super-light foundations (again, so her freckles can show through). To get there, Meghan’s pre-engagement makeup artist, Lydia Sellers, says she would reach for Giorgio Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Foundation in shade 6.25 with a few drops of 5.5. Bounced on with a slightly wet Beautyblender, it gives light, dewy coverage. (via glamour.com)

(Getty Images via glamour.com)

EYES + LASHES

The Look: Her eyes were the main beauty feature as she wore smoky gray eyeshadow and her lashes were bold with the most lovely full and fluttery appearance.

Get The Look:  Rather than overdoing the eyeliner, Meghan tends to play up her lashes. The best way to get this lovely look is to get Volume Lash Extensions! The fullness, length, curl and deep, natural color and overall look is just the ticket to having royally gorgeous lashes.

For eyeliners, her two favorites are M.A.C. Teddy, a gorgeous, gold-flecked brown, and Chanel Eyeliner in Cassis, a shimmery plum that she draws on her upper lash line and water line. (via glamour.com)

LIPS

The Look: Her lips were painted a peachy pale pink shade of lipstick that had a satin finish. (via hapersbazaar.com)

Get The Look: The word on the street is that Markle’s a fan of Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipstick in Very Victoria ($34), a matte, dusty rose-tinted nude that seems polished enough even for the halls of Buckingham Palace or, say, the queen’s personal tea room. Not only does the pink tone give it some warmth—a nonnegotiable when you’re dealing with nude shades—but the matte finish makes it feel more modern than your average neutral lipstick. Also worth noting: Celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury is one of the best-known Brits in her field, so Markle’s choice could be a sly nod to her new country. (via glamour.com)

(Getty Images via glamour.com)

BROWS

The Look: Not overly bold but still quite beautiful, her brows were striking, defined and filled-in to anchor her face.

Get The Look: Sherrille Riley is responsible for Meghan’s brows and told metro.co.uk how she created the perfect brow style for her, which she refers to as the ‘Audrey Hepburn Brow’. The style is to keep the brows as straight as possible with a gradual lift at the tail ends and the style is completely arch-less and in-line with the natural brow. It’s a really modern twist on the iconic brow shape that Audrey was famous for. This effortless shape lifts the face and harmonises the features. Threading is one of the methods Riley uses to achieve this classic brow look on Meghan.
