How to Make Lash Extensions Last Longer

It’s no coincidence that taking care of your lashes gets you the most mileage out of your fluttery friends. Today, we’re sharing five foolproof eyelash extension care tips to make yours last longer! 🌟

Why Don’t My Lash Extensions Last?

Lash extensions will naturally fall out over time along with your real lashes. However, if you properly care for your extensions, you should only need to get lash refills to replace a few lost extensions every two weeks. If you notice your extensions are falling out more rapidly, this could be caused by a few factors, including using oil-based cleansers on your lashes, getting them wet before the application has set and more.

Knowing the proper eyelash extension care is key to knowing how to keep eyelash extensions from falling out and making yours last!

Wondering What to Do in Between Lash Fills? Just Follow the 5 Steps Below!

Even though lash extensions from The Lash Lounge will look great longer thanks to the fact that they’re made with premium materials and sealed to your natural lashes with precise adhesion, we recommend following a few simple tips before your next refill appointment:

1. Clean + Brush Them Daily

It may seem like “How to Care for Eyelash Extensions 101,” but one of the easiest ways to extend the life of your lashes is to keep your lashes clean. In terms of your day-to-day routine, that means keeping up with daily face-washing. If you’ve already built in the suds and scrubs, the good news is there’s no extra task for you.

Try the Best Lash Extension Products:

To wash your eye area, we recommend using our Lash Detox foaming cleanser. Both Lash Detox formulas (unscented and tea tree extract) are oil-free and lash extension-safe. We recommend using oil-free cleansers to keep your lashes clean and secure. Pair this with our Gel Eye Makeup Remover, which is infused with hydrolyzed soy protein to gently remove any trace of makeup and oil and debris from your eye and brow area. You can purchase our Lash Detox foaming cleanser and Gel Eye Makeup Remover at our salons!

Along with cleaning your lashes daily, you’ll also want to make sure you brush your lashes every morning with a clean mascara wand. Why the morning? While you’re sleeping, your lashes can tangle and flip to the side, so the secret to keeping them in place is to brush through and fluff them gently.

Eyelash Cleaning Process

Let’s break down our recommended lash extension care process:

  1. Use our oil-free and alcohol-free Lash Detox foaming cleanser formulated specifically for lash extensions. 🧼
  2. Use a lash-cleansing brush to gently massage the cleanser into your lash line.
  3. Rinse with fresh water until the cleanser and makeup residue is removed.

Does Washing Lash Extensions Make Them Last Longer?

Short answer: Yes! Cleaning away unwanted oils and heavy makeup will protect your extension adhesive from premature erosion. This will also help keep the natural lashes holding your extensions stay strong and healthy and avoid unnecessary lash shedding.

How Often Should You Clean Lash Extensions?

Wash your extensions at least once a day. This will keep any eye makeup or oils on your skin from harming the lashes and adhesive. Be sure to follow our eyelash extension care tips and cleaning process to prolong eyelash extension wear!

2. Be Gentle On Your Lashes

As a rule of thumb for eyelash extension care, messing with your lashes less will help them last. So, avoid rubbing, tugging or plucking when you have lash extensions. If you touch your lash line too much it could cause your extensions to fall off prematurely … who wants that? This can also cause unwanted oils to come into contact with your lashes and hurt the adhesive.

We do know and understand everyone is human, and you may have an itch near your lash line from time to time. The good news is there are ways to soothe the itch without any vigorous rubbing or pulling on your lashes. A simple trick is to use your mascara wand to brush through your lashes gently. But, if you must touch your lash extensions, a slight rub on your eyelid in a circular motion is A-OK, too.

3. Use a Protective Lash Sealant

If you’ve invested in lash extensions, then you should also invest in a protective lash sealant. This is one of our FAVORITE eyelash extension hacks because lash sealant goes a long way to extend the life of the adhesive used to attach the extension to your natural lash. It locks your extensions in place for a longer period. The best lash extension sealant is one that safely and seamlessly seals your lashes. Be sure to purchase one of the two sealants offered at The Lash Lounge: Lash Armor Crystal or Lash Armor Onyx. What’s the difference between these two? The Onyx formula adds a darker sheen to your lash line thanks to the gardenia florida fruit extract. The Crystal formula is clear and applies like a clear lash gel.

A lash sealant is the perfect aftercare product to extend the life of your lash extensions and increase retention in between lash fills. Next to getting your lash extensions themselves, purchasing a lash sealant should be the next priority item on your list!

4. Don’t Miss Your Refills… Like, Ever!

When it comes down to it, making your extensions last and look fab longer boils down to keeping up with your lash refill appointments. We recommend scheduling your refill for every two weeks. It’s the only way to keep your lash line looking full. When you come in for your lash refill appointment, your stylist will perform maintenance to freshen up your current set and place new extensions for renewed fullness. When you come in for refills on the regular, you ensure a full, lush lash line and the fresh look we all love!

On the other hand, if you don’t keep up with your regular refills (we know life happens), your stylist will need to add more extensions than usual to bring that fullness back. This could mean you need to invest in a service upgrade. This is definitely doable! If you know you’ll need a little extra lash love, make sure you let us know when you call to book. We’ll book you for the right amount of time to get your lashes back to the fab fullness you adore.

5. Only Use Lash Extension-Friendly Products

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: not all beauty products are okay to use with lash extensions. Be sure to stay away from waterproof mascara and any oil- or alcohol-based products or cosmetics. And yes, this includes any moisturizers with oil that are applied around the eyes.

If you’re ever unsure about the products you’re using or wondering if something you’re doing is harming your lashes, talk to a stylist at The Lash Lounge. That’s what we’re here for!
