First, Why Do I Get Dry Skin Around My Eyebrows?

From the time of year to a lack of moisturization or even a medical condition, there are many reasons the skin around your brows may be dry and flaky. Here are some common reasons for irritated flaky eyebrows:

Dry skin around eyebrows

For some, dry skin on your face may appear as flaky skin in your eyebrows. While this pesky skin issue isn’t pretty, it may occur in places with cold temperatures or where the air is particularly dry. ❄️ How to combat this is quite easy. Just be sure to moisturize extra during cooler months and especially if you find yourself in dry areas.

Eyebrow eczema

Many of us battle eczema and the inflammation that follows along. And yes, eczema can be the cause of your dry skin….even near or in your eyebrow area.

Contact dermatitis on eyebrows

Contact dermatitis causes the skin to react and become itchy. The irritation and itchiness can further cause your skin to flake off when it contacts an allergen. If you think this is occurring due to a product you’re using on or near your brows, try a patch test. Do this by applying the product(s) on your forearm to see if they cause a reaction. If anything reacts, stop using the product altogether, particularly on your face and near your brows.

Psoriasis in eyebrows

An autoimmune skin condition that causes skin cells to grow fast is known as Psoriasis. This condition creates itchy and patchy skin which can cause your skin to look scaly. It’s common for those with Psoriasis to battle it on the knees and elbows, but it’s also no stranger to other areas of the body, including your eyebrows.

How to Get Rid of Dry Skin in Eyebrows

See our 7 tips for caring for dry and irritated skin around your brows:

  1. Moisturize—Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer on your eyebrows and the skin around your brows. Look for products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which hydrate the skin. 🧴
  2. Patch test beauty products—Choose eyebrow products (pencils, gels, powders) made for sensitive skin. Avoid products with harsh chemicals, fragrances and alcohol, as they can further irritate the skin. If you’re looking to color and fill in your brows, then you’ll want to try an eyebrow tint. Beauty products can gather germs after days of use that may further irritate your skin. With an eyebrow tint, your brows will be colored for up to four weeks. TIP: If you’re concerned about a reaction, ask your stylist to perform a patch test before applying your tint to make sure there isn’t a reaction.
  3. Gently cleanse—Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser to wash your face and eyebrows.  Need a rec? Our Lash Detox foaming cleanser in Unscented or Tea Tree is SO soothing and gets the job done gently!
  4. Create an exfoliation routine—If you have flaky skin, consider a gentle exfoliation routine. Use a soft brush or a mild exfoliating product to remove dead skin cells. This will help to unclog pores and increase blood circulation. (Don’t exfoliate too frequently and risk drying out your skin more and remember to moisturize after exfoliating to restore your skin.)
  5. Avoid over-plucking—If you have a dry skin condition, over-plucking can worsen the area. Stick to a natural shape and avoid excessive tweezing. To ensure you don’t over-pluck but still have the brow look you want, we suggest eyebrow threading services. With eyebrow threading you can get your brows cleaned up and beautifully shaped, without having to pluck them yourself, and the results will last up to four weeks!
  6. Consult a dermatologist—If your dry skin is severe or if you’re unsure about which products to use, consult your dermatologist. They can give you the personalized advice you need based on your skin condition.

7. Prioritize hydration—It sounds like a no-brainer, but drink plenty of water! This will help you maintain overall skin hydration which could make you less prone to dryness and flakiness.

The single best way to manage dry skin in eyebrows—besides tossing an allergy-causing beauty product—is with a cleaning and moisturizing routine to manage inflammation and irritation.

Once you’ve discovered products and a routine that calms your skin and doesn’t cause additional redness or irritation, be sure to stick to the plan so the irritation and dryness don’t return.

Remember, everyone’s skin is different. It might take you some trial and error to find the products and routines that work best for you. But please, always be gentle with your skin and prioritize products that are designed for sensitive skin.
