Bathing With Eyelash Extensions: Myths and Tips

Water and lash extensions: Are they A-OK together? Whether you’re a bubble bath fanatic or you just want to know everything about keeping your lashes in tip-top shape, we’re setting the record straight!

Rub-A-Dub-Dub: Debunking Common Myths About Eyelash Extensions and Water

When it comes to water and lash extensions, there have been many misconceptions over the years. Here at The Lash Lounge, our stylists apply the proper amount of adhesive to cure the bonds on your individual extensions, so you’re always set for a soak in the bath, a refreshing shower and, when summer or your vacation rolls around, even a dip in the pool!

Just make sure to avoid water for the first 8 hours after your lash appointment to allow the adhesive bond to set. After that, soak away!

Myth 1: I Can’t Get My Lash Extensions Wet in the Bathtub or Shower

Great news: You can get your lashes wet! The medical-grade adhesive we use to attach your extension to your natural lash is not only showerproof, but it’s full-fledged waterproof, too!

When applied properly (like our Lash Lounge stylists always do), each extension will last until your natural lash is ready to shed. So, shower away and enjoy that relaxing bath; your eyelash extensions are good to go!

Myth 2: My Lash Extensions Will Not Look the Same After I Get Them Wet

Most people wash, brush, then blow dry our hair after a shower. Lashes are similar, too!

Brushing through your lashes with a clean lash wand following your regular bathing routine is always recommended to keep them fluffed and in place. However, when it comes to heat, take the proper precautions; check out these expert tips on blow drying your hair with lash extensions!.

Soaking Up the Do’s and Don’ts

Now that we’ve cleared up a couple myths on getting your lashes wet, let’s tackle some of the water do’s and don’ts.

DO: Continue Your Usual Lash Care Routine

Just because your skin and hair are fabulously fresh after a nice long shower doesn’t mean your lashes are, too. Buildup from body oils and beauty products can accumulate along your lash line.

Gently clean your lashes every day to keep them squeaky clean. Before or after you bathe, use our Eyelash Foaming Cleanser and one of our two makeup removers: Special Eye & Makeup Remover (great for those with sensitive eyes!) or our Eye Makeup Remover Gel (great for taking off waterproof makeup!)

Clean lashes make healthy lashes; snag all of these products and more at a Lash Lounge near you!

DON’T: Rub your Eyes in the Shower or Bath

If you’re one of those people who loves to give your face a good rub while you’re in the shower, avoid the eye area if possible and be gentle on and near your lash line.

Vigorous rubbing, tugging or anything that could cause friction to your lashes can damage them. As a general rule of thumb, the less you mess with your lashes, the longer they will last.

DO: Take Note of The Products You’re Using While Bathing

When it comes to your lash extensions, not all products are safe to use on or near your eyelashes. Common bodywashes, soaps and lotions contain oil and alcohol, 2 ingredients terrible for lash extensions. Oil and alcohol can break the bond of the eyelash extension adhesive, which can cause the extension to detach from your natural lash.

If you’re ever unsure about any products you’re using on or near your lash extensions, bring them with you to your next appointment and let your expert stylist take a look!

DON’T: Let Strong Shower Jets Vigorously Hit Your Lash Line

Just as we mentioned before about rubbing your eyes and lashes, anything, even the jets of water coming out of a strong shower head, can cause friction to your lash line.

If you’re someone that loves a full face of H2O, consider wearing googles while showering. Yes, it might seem silly, but you do what you gotta do to keep your lashes perfect and protected!

3 Beauty Routine Hacks to Keep Your Lash Extensions…

Lash extensions—they’re a way of life! To keep them fuller, longer, we all know a Lash Lounge membership is a must-have. But, in between appointments, what can you do to keep them in tip-top shape?

Aside from keeping them clean and keeping up with those routine refill appointments, there are some simple things you can do to keep that lash line full, healthy and retained. Sure, you may have to train yourself a bit to change your ways, but it’s a new year. What better time to make a change?

We sat down with our corporate stylist trainer, Shelley, to serve up a whole new batch of lash care wisdom:

1. Rubbing and Itching: Proper Method with Lash Extensions

Do you find yourself rubbing your eyes constantly? Or maybe a pesky itch you just have to scratch? Whatever it is, we understand! But with lash extensions, extensive rubbing can cause them to fall off prematurely.

We know you don’t want to lose any of those beloved lashes or that fabulous fullness, so if you must get to that itch, here are a couple simple tricks to try:

  • Refrain from rubbing your full eye and lash line and, instead, slightly rub your eyelid in a soft, circular motion to alleviate that aggravating itch.
  • Grab that handy lash wand and give your lashes a gentle brush until the itch is gone.

2. Heat: Avoiding a “Hot Mess” Mishap

Little-known fact: heat + lash extensions = bad news. Always pay attention to how close you’re getting your lash extensions (and yes, even your natural lashes) to any kind of heat source. Your lashes can get singed, end up looking clumpy and misshapen and the high heat can even cause your synthetic eyelash extensions to melt—yikes!

What immediately comes to mind? You got it: the hairdryer.

We get it; blow-drying is a must for most of our guests. If you swear by a good blowout, implementing the following two things each time will keep your lashes heat- and harm-free:

  • Put the dryer on a low heat setting. Yes, we know it might take a little longer, but it will be better for your lashes and even your hair, too!
  • Flip your head upside-down and dry. This will keep the heat that’s blowing directly onto your face and eyes to a minimum.

3. Moisturizing: Acing the Application

We are all about skincare here at The Lash Lounge; we love being good to our skin as much as we adore our lashes! However, we know that many moisturizing creams contain no-no ingredients like oil, which is not safe to apply near the eye area or lash line because it can break down the lash extension adhesive.

If you simply can’t give up that favorite oil- or alcohol-based serum or cream, there are ways to apply them a little differently to steer clear of your beloved lash extensions.

See Shelley briefly showcase her own moisturizing routine and demonstrate where and how she places her favorite skincare products.

Need a little recap?

  • Be strategic about where you place creams and moisturizers; do not messily rub all over your face and eyes.
  • Gently apply and rub into certain areas, even under the eye. Just be sure to avoid the eyelid entirely since the product can make its way down to your lash line, breaking the bond of the lash adhesive and the extension.

Studies have shown that two weeks of repetitive actions can turn into a habit. So, try tackling that itch differently, change up your blow-drying routine or implement this new moisturizing method for two weeks straight. You’ll have a new-and-improved routine in no time!

Fall Lash Shedding: How to Care for Your Eyelash…

October is officially here and fall is in the air! But what do we dread about our favorite season? Fall lash shedding. Today, we’re sharing why this happens and what you can do in order to keep your lashes lush and full! #yourewelcome

WHAT IS LASH SHEDDING?

Remember when you’d make a wish after noticing a fallen lash? Yes, that was lash shedding and we all experience it, even with lash extensions.

Even though they completely replenish and regrow every 60–90 days, our lashes fall out in cycles. But don’t worry, this IS a healthy part of our hair-growth routine. On average, we lose up to 20% of our natural lashes every two weeks and, depending on our individual hair-growth, we can shed between 1 and 5 natural eyelashes per day.

The cool thing is that right at this very moment you have a new eyelash growing to replace a lash that fell out and, for the majority of us, this is a process that we hardly notice.

FALL LASH SHEDDING: WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

You know how some animals shed their winter coats? Well, it’s mostly the same for us and lash shedding!

Why does this happen and why this time of year? As fall approaches and the seasons and temperatures begin to change, so does the humidity. This change is what can alter our lash growth cycle and can be the reason we notice a few fallen lashes here and there.

During this time, our bodies are increasing oil production to keep not only our hair, but also our skin from getting dehydrated. Just like it’s not uncommon for us to notice additional shedding with the hair on our head this time of year, it’s the same with our lashes.

HOW DOES LASH SHEDDING AFFECT EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

Here’s the deal: Lash shedding does not magically stop when you have extensions. It’s important to know that when you have a natural eyelash that sheds, your extension will go with it. For all of us, each individual eyelash is programmed to reach a certain length, fall out, then regrow, taking the extension along for the ride.

But, there’s good news! As long as you keep up with your lash refill appointments every 2–3 weeks (like the good lash guest we know you are…wink, wink), your lash line will stay full and gorgeous!

EYELASH EXTENSION CARE DURING THE SHEDDING CYCLE

Keep Your Lashes Clean

When you notice your lashes are shedding, one important thing to do is to keep your extensions clean. Why? During a seasonal change, additional buildup can accumulate along your lash line. To prevent this, use a lash extension-safe cleanser like our special eyelash foaming cleanser that will not only keep your lashes squeaky clean, but can also be used as an all-over facial cleanser. Talk about a win-win!

Another quick tip: Brush your lashes daily with a clean lash wand. This will keep your lashes in place and help to brush away any residue that may have landed along your lash line.

Use A Lash Sealant

Investing in a lash sealant is a good idea year-round, especially during the fall season. While it will not keep your lashes from shedding, a sealant will extend the life of the adhesive, locking your extensions in place for a longer period of time. Just think of it as an extra layer of protection for your lashes during the fall lash shedding season.

We have 2 sealants here at The Lash Lounge:
Our Black Diamond Sealant is a daily-use product that add a dark sheen and extends the life of your extensions. Our Protecting Sealant is used twice a week and is perfect for those with active lifestyles, anyone who lives in high humidity areas and those with oily skin.

Do yourself a favor and snag one of these “must-have” sealants during your next appointment. You’ll thank us later!

Keep Up with Your Lash Refills

Like we’ve mentioned before, it’s so important you do not miss a lash refill appointment…like, ever! Coming in for refills every 2 weeks will allow you to maintain that voluptuous lash look you love, even during the lash shedding cycle. Check out our membership options to make it even easier!

How To Care For Eyelash Extensions: 5 Fool-Proof Ways…

While we love a good laugh, one thing we never kid about is the eyelash extension care and lash longevity. It’s no coincidence that taking care of your lashes gets you the most mileage out of your fluttery friends. Today, we’re sharing some fool-proof ways to keep them at their best for longer!

1. CLEAN + BRUSH THEM DAILY

It may seem like “How to Care for Eyelash Extensions 101,” but one of the easiest ways to extend the life of your lashes is simply to keep them clean. In terms of your day-to-day routine, that just means keeping up with daily face-washing. If you’ve already built in the suds and scrubs, the good news is there’s no extra task for you. We recommend using one of our oil-free, lash extension-safe makeup removers, which is the best way to keep your lashes clean and secure. Purchase a cleanser at one of our salons and choose from either our Special Makeup Remover or our Eye Makeup Remover Gel. Learn more about the difference between these two life-changing lash cleansers.

Wondering just how you should clean your lashes? Don’t worry we won’t leave you hanging. Just follow the 3 steps below:

  1. Use our oil-free and alcohol-free eyewash specifically formulated for lash extensions.
  2. Refrain from pulling or tugging your lashes while washing. Simply use your fingertips or a lash-cleansing brush to gently massage the cleanser into your lash line.
  3. Rinse with fresh water until the cleanser and makeup residue is removed.

Along with cleaning your lashes daily, you’ll also want to make sure you brush your lashes every morning with a clean mascara wand. Why morning? While you’re sleeping, your lashes can tangle and flip to the side, so the secret to keeping them in place is to gently brush through and fluff them.

2. BE GENTLE

As a general rule of thumb for eyelash extension care, the less you mess with your lashes, the longer they will last. So, no rubbing, tugging or plucking when you have lash extensions! If you do a lot of rubbing and messing with your lash line, this could cause your extensions to fall off prematurely…who wants that?

We do know and understand that everyone is human and you may have an itch near your lash line from time to time. The good news is that there are ways to soothe the itch without any vigorous rubbing or pulling on your lashes. A simple trick is to use your mascara wand to gently brush through your lashes. Don’t you feel better already just thinking about it? But if you must, a slight rub on your eyelid in a circular motion is a-ok, too.

3. USE A LASH SEALANT

If you have invested in lash extensions, then you will also want to be sure to invest in a lash sealant. This product goes a long way to extend the life of the adhesive used to attach the extension to your natural lash. It locks your extensions in place for a longer period of time.

Be sure to purchase one of the two we offer: our Protecting Sealer and our Black Diamond Coating Sealant. What’s the difference between these two? The Black Diamond sealer is a daily use product that adds a darker sheen and helps extend the life of your extensions. The Protecting Sealer is used twice weekly and perfect for those with active lifestyles, those who live in high humidity areas, and those with oily skin types.

In short, a lash sealant is the perfect aftercare product to extend the life of your lash extensions and retention in between refills. Next to the investment you’ve made in your lash extensions themselves, purchasing a lash sealer is a close second!

4. ONLY USE LASH EXTENSION-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS

Not all beauty products are okay to use with lash extensions. Be sure to stay away from waterproof mascara and any oil- or alcohol-based products or cosmetics. And yes, this includes any moisturizers with oil that are applied around the eyes.

Check out last week’s post on lash extension-friendly beauty products and cosmetics!

5. DON’T MISS YOUR REFILLS…LIKE, EVER!

When it comes down to it, fundamentally, how to take care of eyelash extensions boils down to keeping up with your lash refill appointments every two weeks. It’s the only way to keep your lash line looking full. When you come in for your refill appointment, your stylist will perform maintenance to freshen up your current set, then place new extensions for added fullness. When you come in for refills on the regular, you ensure a full, lush lash line and a fresh lash look, like we all love!

On the other hand, if you don’t keep up with your regular refills, your stylist will have to add more extensions than usual to bring that fullness back. This could mean you need to invest in a service upgrade. This is definitely doable and we can also make sure to book the right amount of time for your appointment so we can get your lashes back to the fab fullness you adore.

So, schedule your refill appointments regularly and even ask us about our membership program, which will save you money on regular refills and make sure you’re always looking and feeling your best!

Eyelash Extension Care: 3 Simple Steps to Keeping Your…

One of the questions we get asked most often is “How do I clean my lashes?” Some may think eyelash extension care is an in-depth process, but it’s really not at all! Learn how caring for eyelash extensions is as simple as 1, 2, 3:

Step #1: Eyelash Extension Care

  • Splash your eyes with lukewarm water and then gently massage an oil-free makeup remover around your upper and lower lid lines.
  • Splash again until all product is rinsed away.
  • NOTE: Visit a Lash Lounge near you to purchase one of our oil-free, lash extension safe makeup removers!

Step #2: Eyelash Extension Care

  • Apply an oil-free makeup remover to a clean brush and gently wash in a downward motion over the eyelid and lash-line.
  • Rinse with fresh water until all product is removed.
  • NOTE: Never rub back and forth as this will be too abrasive on the lash extensions.

Step #3: Eyelash Extension Care

  • Gently pat the skin around your eyelashes with a lint-free towel or microfiber towel (we recommend The Original MakeUp Eraser) and then just let your lashes air dry.
  • Last but not least, brush through your lashes with a clean mascara wand to separate and fluff.

Eyelash Extension Care: Tips on Brushing and Cleaning Your…

As lash masters, we often get asked how to care for eyelash extensions. The good news is, when you have eyelash extensions, the overall upkeep is very minimal and very easy to manage if you clean and brush them regularly. Follow these eyelash extension care tips (plus visit your salon for refill appointments every 2–3 weeks) and your lashes will stay looking full and fabulous!

#1: Keep Your Eyelashes Clean

We’ll start with the basics of eyelash extension care: Keep that fluffy lash line squeaky clean! When you clean your lashes regularly, you are helping to keep your natural oils at bay. Cleansing regularly also helps prevent premature lash shedding. Cleanse your lashes daily with a gentle, lash extension-friendly cleanser and make sure it’s oil- and alcohol-free!

THE SCARY TRUTH: When you skip your daily lash wash, your lash follicles can get clogged with oil, dirt and debris, which can make it difficult for new lashes to grow.

Despite this, it’s not uncommon for lash stylists to see guests with severe build-up of makeup residue, oil and/or dead skin cells along their lash lines. This is not only unhygienic, but it can also cut into your appointment time because your stylist must make sure they’re squeaky clean before performing your refill.

#2: Brush Your Eyelashes Daily

No one wants a messy lash line. To take care of your eyelash extensions, brush your lashes daily to prevent crisscrossing. A simple 15–20 second sweep through your lashes in the morning will put stray lashes in their place. Make sure you’re gentle when brushing your eyelash extensions, as you don’t want to tug at them if they are tangled or overlapping. And take a quick peek to make sure your lash wand is clean. We don’t want any clumpy mascara getting in the way of that smooth sweep!

BONUS! Brushing your lashes each day helps your extensions last longer.
