Eyebrow Threading vs. Waxing: Which Brow Method Is Best for You?
Your brows play a big role in your overall appearance, and keeping them groomed can make all the difference in looking polished 24/7. But when it comes to shaping them, should you go with threading or waxing?
Let’s compare eyebrow threading vs. waxing so you can decide which method works best for you!
Understanding Eyebrow Threading
Threading is one of the oldest and most trusted methods of hair removal and there’s a reason it’s still so popular today. It’s effective, precise and often gentler on the skin than other options. Here are a few key facts about eyebrow threading:
- While commonly used for brows, threading also works well for facial hair and the upper lip area.
- The process involves twisting a cotton thread into two strands, then gliding it against the direction of hair growth to remove hair from the root.
- At The Lash Lounge, we use a professional, hand-held tool called the FISH tool for even greater precision.
- Threading provides clean, defined results that can last up to 4 weeks, longer than plucking or waxing.
- It’s a great option for sensitive skin, since it doesn’t involve heat, harsh chemicals or direct contact with wax.

Understanding Eyebrow Waxing
Waxing for hair removal has also been around for a long time, particularly for eyebrows. Here’s how it works.
- Waxing involves removing unwanted hair from the root by applying melted wax to the skin.
- Sometimes a paper strip or cloth is applied on top of the wax to assist with a smoother removal process.
- The wax adheres to the hair (and often, parts of the skin) then it is quickly pulled off, taking the hair with it.
Drawbacks of waxing include:
- It can be uncomfortable or painful
- Not ideal for those with sensitive skin as it can leave skin red and irritated
- Ingrown hairs can occur if not done properly
- Hair often needs to be a certain length for the wax to take hold and be affective for hair removal
Benefits of waxing include:
- The ability to remove larger sections of hair at once
- Helpful for thinning coarse hair overtime
- It often removes dead skin cells along with the hair

Which Method Is Right for You?
The choice is yours when it comes to eyebrow threading vs waxing. When deciding, consider these things:
- What’s best for your skin if you’re prone to sensitivities
- How thick your brows (or other areas needing hair removal) are
- Does the idea of chemicals and very warm/hot wax bother you?

FAQs
Is threading or waxing better for sensitive skin?
Threading is often considered better than waxing for sensitive skin primarily because it involves no chemicals or heat.
Does threading hurt more than waxing?
Typically threading should not be painful, however, everyone is different as to which method they prefer. Wax adheres to the skin and pulls it during removal, while threading essentially “snags” and pulls out the individual hairs. The thread has very little direct contact with the skin, minimizing discomfort.
How often should I get my eyebrows threaded or waxed?
It’s recommended that you thread your brows every 4 weeks to keep them defined and manicured. For waxing, it’s often recommended to get your brows waxed every 3–4 weeks.
